**Zora Neale Hurston** was a novelist, folklorist, and anthropologist. She wrote four novels (_Jonah's Gourd Vine_ , 1934; _Their Eyes Were Watching God_ , 1937; _Moses, Man of the Mountain_ , 1939; and _Seraph on the Suwanee_ , 1948); two books of folklore (_Mules and Men_ , 1935, and _Tell My Horse_ , 1938); an autobiography (_Dust Tracks on a Road_ , 1942); an international bestselling nonfiction work (_Barracoon: The Story of the Last ?Black Cargo,?_ 2018);__ and over fifty short stories, essays, and plays. She attended Howard University, Barnard College, and Columbia University and was a graduate of Barnard College in 1928. She was born on January 7, 1891, in Notasulga, Alabama, and grew up in Eatonville, Florida.
