**Flora Annie Steel** (1847-1929) was an English writer. Born in Middlesex, she married Henry William Steel, a member of the Indian Civil Service, in 1867. Together they moved to India, where they lived for the next two decades. During her time in the Punjab, a region in the north of the Indian subcontinent, Steel developed a deep interest in the life of its native people. Befriending local women, she learned their language and collected folk tales-later published in _Tales of the Punjab_ (1894)-while advocating for educational reform. After moving home to Scotland with her family in 1889, Steel began working on her novel _On the Face of the Waters_ (1896) an influential work of historical fiction set during the Indian Mutiny of 1857.
