As a result of adding an extension and new build to Regensburg’s main fire station, not only has the working environment been improved at the station but the urban and architectural character of the immediate surroundings has been transformed. The architects’ practice Diezinger Architekten has succeeded to vastly increase the floor area at the station, which was originally completed in 2001 and accommodates the main command and control centre for emergency services, and reorganise the structures creating a much more functional and attractive complex. A long block with a total length of 128 metres steps up from the four-storey existing part in the east to the

six-storey new build in the west, creating a new landmark on the outskirts of the historic town centre. The façade design with multi-coloured ceramic tiles highlights the unique architecture and gives it an unmistakable character. An oversized gold cat, waiting to be rescued at the edge of the highest block, overlooks the grounds. In order to incorporate the vast amount of required space, the plot has been maxed out right up to the site boundary. One and two-storey buildings with garages, workshops and training facilities, clad in an unobtrusive skin of perforated aluminium sheet, are arranged around a triangular-shaped courtyard. All in all, it is the impressive functionality of the scheme that contributes towards making one of Europe’s most beautiful historic city centres a much safer place.
