The art museum in Marktoberdorf is renowned as a place for contemporary art and education beyond the Bavarian Allgäu region. Due to the clarity and minimalism of the design, the architecture is also exceptional. The ensemble of buildings consists of two connected structures: the Dr. Geiger House, a middle-class residential building from the 1920s, and the new build, the Franz Schmid House, which was completed in 2001. The newer building consists of two clearly cut cubes placed in a slightly offset alignment. A walled forecourt with two large gates made of Corten steel provides a transition between the heterogenous urban context and the museum. The exposed

brickwork both inside and out characterises the appearance and gives the facades a finely patterned texture. The fair-faced brick inside conveys the idea of a vibrant exhibition space with a workshop feel. A fully glazed corridor links the new build and the historic Dr. Geiger House with exhibition rooms, offices and storage space. Thanks to the comprehensive refurbishment work, the conditions have been greatly improved and are now more user friendly. The exhibition space with white walls and historical design features complements the opportunities for displays in the new build.
